LOCAL COUNCILS RECEIVE FLOODPLAIN MANAGEMENT FUNDING

Nationals Member for Lismore Thomas George, today announced three Councilís in the Lismore electorate had been awarded grants totalling $600,000 to assist in understanding and managing the impacts of flooding.

Mr George said Kygole Shire Council would receive $390,000, Richmond River County Council $140,000 and Tweed Shire Council $70,000. The funds come from the NSW Floodplain Management Program.

The program is a component of the NSW Governmentís Flood Prone Land Policy managed by the Department of Environment and Climate Change and Water.

It aims to provide appropriate levels of flood protection to existing and future development through structural and non-structural flood mitigation strategies.

Mr George said this is a continuing program which responds to the severe emotional and economic losses individuals and communities can suffer as a result of floods.
