3 September 2010

Nationals Member for Lismore Thomas George, today announced Richmond River County Council would receive $120,000 for its Estuary Management Program.

Mr George said the funding would be used for the staged implementation of the Richmond Estuary Management Plan.

The program, administered by the Department of Natural Resources, allows a committee including representatives from the local community, industry, environmental interest groups, researchers, and state and local government, to develop and implement their own plans to restore and protect estuaries.

The program focuses on improving or maintaining the overall health and functioning of an estuary, and maintaining the environmental, economic, recreational and aesthetic values of the whole system.

Mr George welcomed the funding which would be used locally on Richmond River estuaries.

He said estuaries were a valuable natural environmental asset that continues to be under increasing pressure from development’.

“Its health and integrity is vital to the proper functioning of the entire catchment ecosystem as well as to the communities that depend on them.”
