Nationals Member for Lismore Thomas George congratulates the Richmond River Historical Society for winning the 2010 Regional Museums Award.

More than 100 nominations were received for the Awards, which include three categories: Best Volunteer-run Museum, Best Small Museum and Best Indigenous Cultural Centre.

The Richmond River Historical Society, based in Lismore, took out the Best Volunteer-run Museum.

“This is a wonderful achievement for this very active museum,” Mr George said.

“The Richmond River Historical Society has proven invaluable in preserving all facets of our local history and in sharing stories about the district.

“The many volunteers who help out at the society are to be congratulated on their hard work and commitment to our community.”

The Regional Museums Award, now in its third year, was developed with the assistance of Museums Australia to enable some of Australia’s smallest organisations – many volunteer run - to bring their organisations to a national audience.

The Awards also seek to highlight them any roles that museums play in their communities that extend beyond the preservation and display of artefacts and include genealogical assistance, tourist destination, education facility and fund raising institution.
