29 September 2010

Nationals Member for Lismore Thomas George congratulates Tweed Palliative Support (TPS), Murwillumbah, on being named a finalist in the 2010 NSW/ACT Regional Achievement & Community Awards.

The Awards are about recognising rural and regional achievers in communities.

Tweed Palliative Support is one of three finalists vying to take out the category: NSW Land & Property Management Authority Community of the Year Award (population under 15,000). Also named as finalists in this category is Broken Hill Volunteer Community, Broken Hill, and Disability Trust, Fairy Meadow.

Mr George said being a named a finalist in this prestigious award was worthy recognition of the great work TPS does.

"Since this group formed in 1998, TPS volunteers have worked tirelessly to provide free professional and caring support service to clients, their families and carers at a time when they need it most," Mr George said.

"TPS certainly deserves to be recognised for the wonderful and invaluable work they offer our community. I wish them well with the Awards and in their future endeavours."

TPS is a not-for-profit home-based volunteer organisation serving the Tweed Shire. It assists those with life-threatening illnesses to stay at home as long as possible by providing a range of services to palliative patients and their families, including personal care, shopping, transport to medical treatments, loan of medical equipment and emotional support.

Winners of the 2010 Regional Achievement and Community Awards will be announced at a Gala Presentation Dinner on Saturday 30 October at the City Beach Function Centre, Wollongong.
