LOCAL SCHOOLS AWARDED FUNDING FOR ENVIRONMENTAL PROJECTS

LOCAL SCHOOLS AWARDED FUNDING FOR ENVIRONMENTAL PROJECTS

22 October 2010

Nationals Member for Lismore Thomas George is pleased to announce four schools in his electorate have been awarded funds to support their respective environmental projects undertaken.

Mr George said Barkers Vale Public School, Bhaktivedanta Swami Gurukula School and Rainbow Ridge School for Steiner Education each received $2,500 from the NSW Environmental Trust.

The Trust was established in 1998 to support exceptional environmental projects that do not receive funds from the usual government sources.

Mr George said Barkers Vale's received the funding to help with their kitchen garden, which aims to increase understanding of the need to reduce waste and to grow food locally and organically.

"Bhaktivedanta Swami Gurukula School will use the funding to go towards their sustainable vegetable ecogarden and notice board and Rainbow Ridge School for Steiner Education was awarded the funding for their project, the Rainbow Ridge School Biodynamic Kitchen Garden.

"These are both great projects being undertaken and I applaud each school for implementing them.

"Getting children involved on a practical level like these projects do, is a fantastic way for children to learn and understand first-hand the importance of maintaining and caring for our precious environment."
