OPPOSITION OPENS PARLIAMENT AFTER INCOMPETENT AND HIGHLY PAID LABOR SPEAKERS GO MISSING

Friday 29 October 2010

Temporary Speaker, National Party Whip and Member for Lismore Thomas George was forced to open the NSW Lower House today after the designated Labor speakers, who are paid an extra $40,000 for their speakers jobs, failed to show up for work.

"Labor's highly paid speakers were all missing this morning when the Parliament was supposed to open at 10am," Mr George said.

"Goodness knows where these highly paid Labor speakers were, but they weren't in the Parliament at 10am," he said.

"The people of NSW would be outraged to learn the highly paid Labor speakers failed to show up to work when they get tens of thousands of dollars in extra pay to act as speakers of the Parliament.

"This episode proves yet again the Keneally Labor Government is a failed and incompetent rabble.

"If it weren't for the NSW Liberals & Nationals the people's Parliament would have remained closed.

"It's a measure of the Keneally Labor Government's incompetence that aside from being unable to run the State, they couldn't even get one of their highly paid speakers to open Parliament."

Labor's speakers get the extra 'Salary of Office' for their official roles.

Position Labor MP Salary of Office
Deputy Speaker Tanya Gadiel $39,162
Assistant Speaker Grant McBride $26,108
Assistant Speaker Alison Megarrity $26,108

It is understood to be the first time that an Opposition Member has had to conduct the opening of Parliament.

"The incompetent Keneally Labor Government must explain why they failed to show up for work today," Mr George said.
