DEPUTY PREMIER CONGRATULATES THOMAS GEORGE ON HIS APPOINTMENT AS DEPUTY SPEAKER

3 May 2011

Deputy Premier and Nationals Leader Andrew Stoner has congratulated Member for Lismore Thomas George on his appointment as the Deputy Speaker of the Legislative Assembly.

On the first day of the 55th NSW Parliament, Thomas George was today appointed the Deputy Speaker of the Legislative Assembly. “It was an honour to nominate Thomas for the position of Deputy Speaker on the floor of Parliament today, with the Premier seconding the nomination,” Mr Stoner said.

“Given the four years he spent as Temporary Speaker over the last term, I am confident Thomas will serve the Parliament and the people of NSW well in his new role as Deputy Speaker.

“Representing people who live alongside the Queensland border, Thomas George is known for his passion in advocating for all those who can too easily be forgotten by others on Macquarie Street.

“Thomas has always risen above politics and is thus respected on both sides of the Chamber.

“You will never meet a more decent and honourable man than Thomas George.

“Thomas has a wealth of life experience, having worked as a bank officer, a stock and station agent, a real estate agent and a publican before entering politics.

“He has always been willing to lend a hand where it is needed and has served as the President of the Casino Chamber of Commerce and Industry, as a representative on the Northern Rivers Area Consultative Committee, and as a Director of the Northern Regional Westpac Life Saver Rescue Helicopter.

“Whether back in his community or in the Parliament, Thomas’s interest has always been to help others.

“Anyone who has witnessed Thomas in full flight at the Young Auctioneer's Competition at the Sydney Royal Easter Show would agree that he is certainly suitable for the job.

“In Thomas George, the NSW Parliament has a fine man who will work tirelessly for the good of all in his role as Deputy Speaker of the Legislative Assembly.”
