Thomas George, Nationals Member for Lismore today urged community organisations in the Lismore electorate to take advantage of the 2012 Community Development Grants Program offered by the NSW Government’s Community Relations Commission (CRC).

The program provides $1 million in funding assistance to community organisations across NSW for projects that promote community engagement and cultural diversity.

“These grants of up to $18,200 are available to not-for-profit, incorporated organisations who want to increase participation of members of their communities into mainstream life in NSW,” Mr George said.

“This could be done through projects that encourage cultural diversity and provide valuable networking opportunities and services for people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.

“By promoting understanding and awareness of diverse cultures through workshops, exhibitions, festivals and support services, these grants will help us build stronger communities and a more harmonious society.

“The whole community benefits from projects that help people of all backgrounds actively participate and contribute to the broader Australian community.

“Community organisations use government funds very efficiently because much of the work is done on a voluntary basis and, therefore, these grants represent very good value for money for NSW taxpayers.

“Some examples of proposals likely to be approved for funding by the CRC would be a multicultural volunteer program, a multicultural youth partnership, or a contribution towards the employment of a worker to assist a senior citizens group, or to meet the needs of socially-isolated women,” Mr George said.

The closing date for submissions is Friday 27 May 2011. Further information is available on the CRC website at
