GEORGE ACKNOWLEDGES PALLIATIVE CARE WEEK

27 May 2011

Nationals Member for Lismore Thomas George today acknowledged Palliative Care Week and the important work of health care professionals who provide care and support for people of all ages with a life threatening illness, with little or no prospect of cure.

“Palliative care professionals make a very important contribution, their compassion and skills help patients live well in the final stages of their life, which is often a time of great emotional stress for them and their loved ones,” Mr George said.

Palliative care services in NSW provide coordinated medical, nursing and allied health care, delivered whenever possible in the environment of the person’s choice.

Palliative care involves physical, psychological, emotional and spiritual support for patients and their families, friends and carers.

In the last 50 years the experience of dying has changed in Australia and with that the needs of palliative care patients have changed too.

“Australians are living longer than ever before and are also experiencing significant periods of illness and disability due to chronic health conditions,” Mr George said.

“There is increasing recognition that in many cases, palliative care can be more effectively and efficiently provided in the community setting.

“Providing more support for people who choose to die at home will help to meet patient and carer needs and preferences, and at the same time help to manage demand for acute care services.

“The NSW Government recognises the importance of providing quality palliative care services and thanks palliative care health workers for their compassion and dedication in delivering these services.

“Palliative Care Week is a good time to draw attention to the great work – and challenges faced – by these hard working health professionals,” Mr George said.
