ROAD SAFETY UPGRADES FOR NORTH LISMORE, NIMBIN, AND WYRALLAH AREAS ANNOUNCED

10 June 2011

Nationals Member for Lismore Thomas George today announced funding for safety upgrades in the North Lismore, Nimbin and Wyrallah areas to help reduce the road toll and improve safety.

“This initiative is part of the $170 million, five-year Road Toll Response Package,” Mr George said.

“Funding will be provided statewide for road safety engineering work including highway and local government route safety reviews, the installation of rumble strips, wire rope barriers and the widening of road shoulders in high crash areas.

“Parts of the North Lismore, Nimbin and Wyrallah areas have been identified as having poor crash history and in response these sites have been selected as a priority for safety upgrades.”

Mr George announced more than $790,000 has been secured so safety work can be carried out on Woodlawn Road, Stony Chute Road, Wyrallah Road and Blue Knob Road, weather permitting.

“Work will involve road widening, road resurfacing and the installation of guardrails and wire rope safety barriers,” Mr George said.

“This will result in safer roads with lower ongoing maintenance costs and is part of the RTA’s commitment to improving roads in the North Lismore, Nimbin and Wyrallah areas.

“While the road toll has been reducing during the past decade, there are still too many people dying on NSW roads.

“Preliminary figures for 2010 show 421 people died on NSW roads which is why road safety remains a key priority.”
