TOURISM TO THRIVE IN NORTHERN RIVERS THANKS TO DESTINATION NSW

24 June 2011

Destination NSW has become a reality after legislation passed the NSW Parliament, enacting the formation of the new statutory tourism authority.

“Now we can get on with the task of promoting NSW and in particular, the Northern Rivers,” Nationals Member for Lismore, Thomas George said.

“For far too long, the attractions of the North Coast have been neglected or undersold as a tourist destination, but now we have a Government determined to aggressively promote tourism and major events, not just in the metropolitan areas of NSW, but very much in the regions as well.

Destination NSW will be backed by an expenditure of $400 million over the next four years, to realise the full potential of Sydney and regional NSW as a global tourism and event destination.

“It will have the support of a newly formed advisory group, the Visitor Economy Taskforce, made up of industry experts.

Destination NSW will contain an Events Division and a Tourism Division, each with its own advisory board. A Chief Executive Officer for Destination NSW will be recruited and the Directors of Events NSW and Tourism NSW will continue to direct their entities under the DNSW umbrella.

“Tourism and major events are major planks of the NSW Liberals & Nationals Government’s pre-election commitment and now that Destination NSW is a reality, we will get on with the task of rejuvenating the State’s and Northern NSW economy through this most important economic sector.

“I am looking forward to playing a part in the serious business of promoting this region to both Australian and international tourists,” Mr George said.
