Red Cross Regional Office Closure I am extremely disappointed with the decision by Australian Red Cross to close the Regional Office in Lismore and transfer responsibilities to Kempsey.
Due to the large number of Red Cross & community members who contacted me to also express their disgust I organised a meeting which was held on Monday 24 May. This was attended by over 100 members from 22 branches across the area. I was pleased a number of people from Kyogle & surrounding branches were able to attend and also thank Val Ferris for stepping in and acting as Minute Secretary on the day.
From the meeting the following motions were raised and carried unanimously:
- This meeting make urgent representation to Red Cross Australia demanding that the Regional Office in Lismore to be kept open at least until the Kempsey office is officially opened.
- Any sales of land and or assets from within this region, that the proceeds are returned to this community for Red Cross members to decide the allocation of funds.
- A motion of Dissent be placed on the CEO of the Australian Red Cross, and also the National Board of Australian Red Cross and its members, as we believe the action of closing the Lismore Regional Offices and the subsequent dismissal of staff is not in keeping with the fundamental principal of the International Red Cross.
Even if this closure does go ahead, I know the hundreds of volunteers who so graciously give of their time and energy will continue to do the good work of the Red Cross locally for a long time to come.
