Yesterday Nationals Member for Lismore Thomas George MP presented Mr Grant Virtue of Bexhill with a Premierís Community Service Award.

Mr George surprised Mr Virtue by attending the service at the Church of the Good Shepherd in Bexhill to present the award.

The location was most appropriate as Mr Virtue has been the organist at the church since 1947. He was also instrumental in acquiring a pipe organ for the church in 1962, which is a focal point and attraction for the small village.

Whilst the leader of the youth fellowship in 1957 Mr Virtue lead the group to establish the Open Air Cathedral at Inspiration Point on a hill above the church. He is still the caretaker of this area today, maintaining it himself together with organising funding to undertake works. The cathedral is very popular for weddings & baptisms, as well as a local tourist attraction.

Mr Virtue, together with his wife Elaine, organise an annual concert at the church & bus trips to musicals in Brisbane which raise funds for the church & cathedral.

Mr Virtue was also the organist at St Paul's Presbyterian Church in Lismore for 37 years before retiring in 2011.

Mr Virtue acknowledged none of this would be possible without the love and support of his wife Elaine.
