NIMBIN COMMUNITY TAKES OUT TOP GREEN GLOBE AWARDS
Nimbin Neighbourhood and Information Centre (NNIC) took out the NSW Government’s Community Sustainability and the Environmental Excellence Awards at last night’s Green Globe Award ceremony at NSW Parliament House.
Nationals Member for Lismore, Thomas George, congratulated NNIC saying they beat 37 finalists from across NSW to take out the title of joint winner of the Premier’s Award for Environmental Excellence.
“The Centre also won the Community Sustainability Award, sponsored by UrbanGrowth, for their work driving food security and renewable energy projects in the Northern Rivers region,” Mr George said.
“Thanks to NNIC, Nimbin now runs a successful farmers market, mobile community grain mill, food equipment library and has set up a beekeepers group.
“They have also pioneered the Nimbin Community Solar Farm that involves six other community buildings and generates 45kW of solar power.
“NNIC’s win just goes to show that no matter the size or budget of an organisation, it is people power that makes a real difference,” Mr George said.
NSW Environment Minister, Robyn Parker, presented NNIC with the top Award saying that their commitment to sustainability was ‘leadership by example’.
“The NSW Government runs these awards to foster opportunity and partnership with the community and to showcase environmental excellence in NSW.
“NNIC is a deserving winner as their project truly makes it easier for people to get involved with their local community to care for their local environments.
“It’s inspiring to see NNIC and all of this year’s winners sharing their knowledge and ideas with others, helping to make businesses, communities and Government more sustainable,” said Ms Parker.
