ANZAC LEGEND HONOURED IN LISMORE ELECTORATE
The Spirit of ANZAC is strong in communities across the Lismore Electorate, Nationals Member for Lismore Thomas George said this week in the lead-up to the national day of remembrance.
Mr George has again produced an informative eight-page booklet, titled “The Spirit of ANZAC”, which emphasises Australia’s involvement in many theatres of war.
The publication also carries a handy reference guide to various ANZAC commemoration services and marches across the electorate.
With this year marking the centenary since the start of World War I, there is a particular focus on local people who served in this conflict from 1914-18.
ANZAC Day commemorates the landing of Australian soldiers at Gallipoli on April 25, 1915 – this year being the 99th anniversary since the start of this campaign where young men forged the Spirit of ANZAC – mateship, courage, sacrifice and good humour. The ANZAC legend was born.
“Thousands of people in our communities will gather on this special day to honour and remember those who served and those who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country in all conflicts of war,” Mr George said.
“These sacrifices were made so today we can enjoy the freedom of speech and democracy in a country which offers us so much opportunity.”
Mr George said many people from across the electorate have been involved in war – some of those never returned home.
The ANZAC booklet, being delivered to households across the electorate, features articles on local people who helped make a difference when their country needed them most.
“It is very important that we all acknowledge the history which helped build Australia as a nation. The Gallipoli campaign was a defining moment in this country’s development and so ANZAC Day is an important occasion for Australians. This is our chance to stand and honour those who gave everything in defence of our nation and for the greater cause,” Mr George said.
“The booklet aims to emphasise the true meaning of ANZAC – to help us remember that thousands of people gave their lives fighting for our future.”
