Nationals Member for Lismore today announced Dr Lisa Cottee as the Local Women of the Year for the electorate of Lismore as part of the 2014 NSW Women of the Year Awards.

Mr George said the NSW Women of the Year Awards showcase inspirational stories of commitment, sacrifice and extraordinary achievement.

“These awards are important as there so are many wonderful women making an outstanding contribution to the NSW community. These include the local heroes and volunteers who deserve to be recognised.

“Women such as Lisa are fantastic role models within the community.”

For over 10 years, Dr Cottee has been travelling to Bali, China, Myanmar (Burma) & Cambodia to perform cataract and other eye surgery in remote areas of these countries. She travels three times a year, visiting each country to carry out surgery over a two week period throughout different times of the year.

Dr Cottee undertakes this work in a voluntary capacity, providing her expertise and skills to the local community. She also donates money towards much needed equipment and expenses to carry out this work. During any two week period in China, the team which Dr Cottee is part of perform between 200-300 operations.

Dr Cottee works selflessly to make a difference in the lives of underprivileged people that would otherwise not have the benefits of eye surgery. Her work is truly inspirational and respected by her colleagues, peers and community alike.

“Dr Cottee is a quiet achiever performing these outstanding humanitarian services without the knowledge of her own community, but today we acknowledge her dedication,” Mr George said.

The presentation of this award to Dr Cottee has been delayed due to her work commitments.
