LISMORE RECEIVES $130,000 IN ENVIRONMENTAL GRANTS

Environment Minister Rob Stokes and Member for Lismore Thomas George today announced ten environmental grants totalling $130,000 to fund new projects.

Mr George said the NSW Government was providing the grants to Lismore City Council and nine local schools.

“Lismore City Council will use a grant of $100,000 to support landholders in managing ecosystems. They have partnered with Southern Cross University to design an education program that will include planning workshops, field days, and resource kits on relevant land management techniques,” Mr George said.

“Five schools have been awarded $2,500 Eco Schools grants for diverse and impressive environmental projects.

“Students from both the Goolmangar School and Tregeagle Public School will work with other groups and the community to improve koala habitat. Students at Lismore Public School will create a sustainable sensory garden that brings students, teachers and the community together.

“At Murwillumbah Public School their grant will create a bush tucker garden and outdoor learning space. Students from Trinity Catholic College Lismore will weed and revegetate nearby riparian zone on the Wilson River.

“And five schools will receive $3,500 each to create or improve productive gardens with Food Gardens in Schools grants. These are: Dunoon Public School, Kadina High School, Murwillumbah Public School, Summerland Christian College, and Woodenbong Central School.

Mr Stokes said these grants were part of a $2.4 million funding round for schools, community groups, research organisations and government agencies.

“By designing, planting, tending and harvesting these food gardens, students at all five schools will learn about nutrition and resource management as well as gardening.”

The NSW Government has awarded 134 grants totalling $35.2 million through the Environmental Trust’s contestable grants programs so far this financial year.
