$1.8 MILLION FOR KYOGLE’S FLOODPLAIN MANAGEMENT

Environment Minister Rob Stokes and Member for Lismore Thomas George today announced $1.8 million for local floodplain management in Kyogle.

Mr George said the NSW Government is providing funds to help the Kyogle community better manage floods when they occur.

“This major project involves a partial ring levee, an additional Fawcetts Creek flood breakout, finishing construction of the levee bank, flood breakout channel, river bank stabilisation, creation of easements and restoration of minor structures,” Mr George said.

“These flood management measures are going ahead in keeping with Kyogle Council’s floodplain risk management plan.

“I am pleased the NSW Liberals & Nationals Government has stepped up to help our community deal with these natural disasters.”

Mr Stokes said more than $16 million is being made available to councils and other authorities for 51 new projects across NSW.

“The NSW Government’s Floodplain Management Program aims to reduce the impact of flooding on communities and to reduce public and private losses resulting from floods,” Mr Stokes said.

Emergency Services Minister Stuart Ayres said the Floodplain Risk Management Grants Scheme provides financial support to councils and other land managers to prepare and implement floodplain risk management plans to reduce damage and loss that floods can cause.

“The projects funded under this program will also help to save lives and property and help communities prepare for the impacts of flooding,” Mr Ayres said.

Councils contribute their own funding to projects.
