Members of the community are invited to have their say on the final concept design for a new Bruxner Highway bridge over the Clarence River at Tabulam.

Member for Lismore Thomas George said Roads and Maritime Services today published the Review of Environmental Factors and concept design for the project, which found a new bridge will have significant benefits to the community.

“The Review of Environmental Factors is an important step in the community consultation process as it collates information from a number of environmental and technical assessments completed in the past year,” Mr George said.

“The assessment found replacing the existing Tabulam bridge with a new bridge will reduce bridge maintenance costs, improve traffic flow, increase road safety for all road users and provide a better connection across the Clarence River for pedestrians and cyclists.

“In the past 10 years an average of $700,000 a year was spent maintaining the existing Tabulam bridge.

“Future maintenance costs would increase significantly as timber elements are replaced.

“The existing bridge is narrow allowing only one lane of traffic and has no dedicated pedestrian or cyclist facilities.

“The new bridge will improve freight connectivity by allowing heavier vehicles to cross.”

Mr George said extensive measures for recognising the history of Clarence River crossings at Tabulam are also detailed in the Review.

“The Bruxner Highway bridge at Tabulam was built in 1903 and as early as 1863 a punt aided river crossings,” Mr George said.

“The history of the bridge will be included in information displays on the viewing platform of the new bridge.

“And though the existing bridge poses transport limitations, elements of the existing bridge can be incorporated in the new bridge.”

Mr George said community members can have a say on the Review of Environmental Factors and concept design until Friday 27 March, 2015.

“A community information session will be held on Thursday 12 March between 3pm and 7pm at Tabulam Community Hall on Barnes Street, Tabulam,” Mr George said.

“Feedback can also be submitted by emailing or writing to The New Tabulam Bridge Project, GHD Reply Paid 85013, Sydney NSW 2000.

“All feedback will be reviewed and a submissions report will then be published.”
