THOMAS GEORGE ANNOUNCES LISMORE ELECTORATE WOMAN OF THE YEAR
Member for Lismore Thomas George today announced Mrs Rita Richards as the Local Woman of the Year for the electorate of Lismore as part of the 2015 NSW Women of the Year Awards.
Mr George said the NSW Women of the Year Awards showcase inspirational stories of commitment, sacrifice and extraordinary achievement.
“These awards are important as there so are many wonderful women making an outstanding contribution to the NSW community. These include the local heroes and volunteers who deserve to be recognised,” Mr George said.
“Women such as Rita are fantastic role models within the community.”
Mrs Richards has been involved with the United Hospital Auxiliary since 1990, first in Kyogle, and in Lismore since 2003, holding the positions of President, Secretary & Treasurer. In 2012, Mrs Richards was awarded Life Membership. She is always involved in volunteering at the Auxiliary Coffee Lounge or Gift Shop, selling raffle tickets, cooking, sewing and generally fundraising for the organisation, which raises vital funds to help purchase equipment for the Lismore Base Hospital.
Mrs Richards is also an active member of St Andrew’s Anglican Church in Lismore. She works in the Church Op Shop one day per week, is part of the Emergency Food Relief team and is on the fundraising committee, and is also a Hospital Pastoral Visitor.
“Rita is a quiet achiever, performing these services without the need for recognition from her own community, but today we acknowledge her dedication,” Mr George said.
