LISMORE SHORTLISTED FOR SHARE IN REGIONAL AIRPORT INFRASTRUCTURE FUNDING

Lismore Regional Airport has been shortlisted for consideration for a share of up to $95 million of NSW Government funding for infrastructure upgrades to help boost local tourism and create local jobs.

Thomas George MP, Member for Lismore said Lismore City Council’s application for Restart NSW funding will now move to the next stage of detailed application as one of 24 shortlisted projects under the NSW Government’s Regional Tourism Infrastructure Fund (RTIF) Regional Airports program.

“This is fantastic news for Lismore and Council will now be invited to make a detailed application for funding.

“The local tourism industry makes a significant contribution to the economy and the Government is keen to support that contribution by investing in regional infrastructure to help boost visitor numbers and create jobs.

“This funding aims to help strengthen and diversify regional economies with support for tourism infrastructure projects including the expansion of regional airports that service popular regional tourism destinations.

Minister for Regional Development John Barilaro said 33 regional airports had submitted requests for Restart NSW funding which has been shortlisted to these 24 projects.

“We called on local councils and owners of eligible NSW regional airports earlier this year to apply for Restart NSW funding from the $110 million Regional Tourism Infrastructure Fund (RTIF).

“The RTIF supports the development and growth of regional tourism by investing in critical visitor economy infrastructure such as airports, cruise terminals and rail trails.

“The level of interest we’ve seen in this program paints a very positive picture for tourism growth in the 24 LGAs shortlisted, so we have almost doubled our initial reservation from the $110 million fund to offer up to $95 million for regional airport infrastructure.

“The tourism industry makes a major contribution to regional NSW economy, but while over half of international tourists visiting Australia arrive at Sydney’s Kingsford-Smith Airport, only 20 per cent travel on to regional NSW.
