Long Day Care centres in the Lismore area will receive funding to deliver preschool programs, the Minister for Early Childhood Education Leslie Williams said yesterday.

Mrs Williams and the Member for Lismore Thomas George visited Lismore Early Learning Centre to discuss the new funding arrangements with staff.

“Long Day Care is the preferred option for many working families. We want to provide children with the same opportunity, regardless of the type of service they attend,” Mrs Williams said.

“The staff at Lismore Early Learning Centre have achieved a rating exceeding the National Quality Standard. Maintaining such a high standard of service delivery in early childhood education is no simple task.

I commend the centre for its diligence and dedication to ensuring children at the centre are receiving high quality care and education.”

Mr George said services can use the funding to purchase resources, develop a preschool program based on the Early Years Learning Framework and to broaden staff capability, including upgrading qualifications.

“Preschools in the Lismore electorate have already benefited from this Government’s reforms and it is fantastic that this work is now being extended to Long Day Care centres,” Mr George said.

“Funding will be made available to services by October and I would encourage long day care centres to return their funding contracts and payment information to the Department of Education by 21 August.”

The new Long Day Care National Partnership Grants Program is part of an agreement between the NSW and Commonwealth Governments to increase participation in preschool programs for four and five-year-old children in the year before school.
