LISMORE CITY COUNCIL AND BYRON BAY’S BROOKFARM TAKE HOME FOUR GREEN GLOBE GONGS
Member for Lismore Thomas George has congratulated Lismore City Council and Byron Bay’s Brookfarm for winning prestigious Green Globe awards.
Environment Minister Mark Speakman announced this year’s Green Globe Awards winners, which celebrate environmental excellence, leadership and innovation, at a gala ceremony at the Art Gallery of NSW, last night.
Mr George praised the Northern Rivers macadamia producer, Brookfarm, for winning the Premier’s Award for Environmental Excellence, the highest accolade of all 21 Green Globe awards, and the Small Business Sustainability category.
“Brookfarm has installed 288 solar panels on its bakehouse, saved 160 kilolitres of water a year through rainwater recycling and created a tree planting program on the farm with 30,000 trees which have stored over 2,310 tonnes of carbon,” Mr George said.
He also congratulated Lismore City Council for winning the Local Government Sustainability category and the Regional Sustainability Award for a series of environmental projects and initiatives.
The Council has established Australia’s first council run solar farm and setting the challenge to generate all its electricity from renewable sources by 2023.
“Lismore now has a $3.65 million state-of-the-art materials recovery facility to process recyclables from Lismore and four neighbouring local government areas,” Mr George said.
“The Council is also leading the way in landfill innovations – it was one of the first to use a new landfill technique which caps the landfill waste with diverse native vegetation instead of clay and gravel.”
Mr Speakman congratulated this year’s 21 winners for their role in leading sustainable development across the economy and community.
An independent panel of leading environmental experts helped select this year’s winners. The awards are considered the leading environmental awards in NSW and have been running for 16 years.
