Minister for Women Pru Goward was joined by Member for Lismore Thomas George to announce Maree Burke as the 2016 Local Woman of the Year for Lismore.

Ms Goward said Mrs Burke’s nomination recognises her outstanding achievements through many years of hard work and dedication as a committed community member and volunteer.

“It’s the hard work of community heroes like Maree that serves as an inspiration to women across the community and New South Wales,” Ms Goward said.

For many years Maree has volunteered with Palliative Care and in the local nursing home, providing comfort, friendship and care to patients and residents.

Maree helps provide respite to local carers by looking after family members so they can have a well deserved rest.

For years Maree has repaired and refurbished computers to supply to seniors in the district to teach them how to be part of the technological world and stay in contact with family and friends.

She has also been a member of the local View and Quota Clubs.

Maree, together with her husband Martin, also raised two of their grandchildren from infancy.

Mr George said he was delighted to name Mrs Burke as the 2016 Lismore Local Woman of the Year.

“It is truly a privilege to be able to acknowledge Maree’s work in our community,” Mr George said.

Local award winners will be invited to join their Member of Parliament at the 2016 NSW Women of the Year award ceremony to be held at Parliament House in March.
