BE AWARE OF FALL IMPACTS THIS APRIL FALLS MONTH

Member for Lismore today encouraged elderly members of the community and their family members to find out how they can prevent the risk of a fall, as part of this year’s April Falls Month 2016.

Mr George said April Falls Month raises awareness of the danger and impact of falls in the community, especially among the elderly and frail.

This year’s theme is “Share the Care: Falls Prevention is everyone’s business”.

“An unexpected fall can be both painful and upsetting for the individual and often involves a long recovery period,” Mr George said.

“In NSW, falls are a major cause of harm to older people. Fall-related injuries impose a substantial burden on the health and aged care systems and on community services.”

“Fall-related hospitalisations are increasing in NSW at an average of 2.5 per cent, per year (2013-14), with the greatest increase in people over 85.

“Prevention is better than recovery. The NSW Falls Program is supporting improvement in care for older people by educating staff, patients, families and carers in falls prevention.”

All NSW Local Health Districts will be involved with April Falls Month, including themed activities in hospitals, community-based activities and staff education.
