Northern Rivers Echo

Young people in the electorate now have a better opportunity to get a job as the Regional Vocational Education and Training Pathways program is rolled out in the region.

Connect Northern Rivers Inc. will provide career mentoring, help young people get work experience and assist with the transition to training and employment, including apprenticeships and traineeships.

Young people wanting to access the services can contact Connect Northern Rivers Inc. at www.connectnr.com/contact.php

My latest ANZAC brochure will be in your mailbox soon.

On the back cover is a listing of all the local services being held on 25 April. I encourage you to attend and pay tribute to the first Anzacs and to all the brave servicemen and women who have followed in their footsteps.

Additional copies are available from my office.

I recently met Fiona Byrne to congratulate her on her new role as the local Aboriginal Client and Community Support Officer for NSW Justice at the Lismore Courthouse.

Fiona will coordinate Lismoreís Aboriginal Community Justice Group. The group, made up of Indigenous Elders and volunteers, works with justice agencies on crime prevention programs to make the criminal justice system work more effectively for Aboriginal people.

With the support of the community justice group, Fiona will help Aboriginal victims and offenders through the court process. Aboriginal people are already overrepresented in prisons and we donít want to see a situation where an Indigenous person is remanded in custody because they misunderstood their bail conditions or got a court date wrong.

Fiona will also assist with Circle Sentencing for Aboriginal offenders and the Care Circle program that encourages culturally sensitive decision making and care plans for Aboriginal children and families.

Fiona will be working closely with two new Indigenous trainees Noeline and Isaachar who have started a 12 month traineeship as part of an innovative program aimed at giving them the skills and confidence to find full time employment.

Lismore Courthouse has been supporting the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander indigenous trainee program for over 15 years.
