Thomas George, Nationals Member for Lismore, today welcomed the beginning of national Refugee Week 2016, which runs until Saturday 25 June 2016.

Mr George said Refugee Week 2016 was an opportunity to reflect on the outstanding contribution refugees have and will continue to make to NSW.

“For generations, NSW has been a refuge to those fleeing persecution and injustice. It has been a home for those who want to start a better life for themselves and their loved ones,” Mr George said.

“As a community, we are all the richer because of the enormous contributions made by generations of refugees who have made NSW their home.

“Importantly, this week is an opportunity for everyone in our community to learn more about the personal stories of refugees and their contributions.”

The small community of Mingoola has been a wonderful recent example of welcoming refugees to the area and embracing them into the local life.

The theme of this year’s Refugee Week is “With Courage Let Us All Combine”, which celebrates the courage of refugees and encourages people to unite to help refugees.
