NSW GOVERNMENT SUPPORTS LISMORE FRIENDSHIP FESTIVAL
Minister for Multiculturalism, Ray Williams, and local member for Lismore, Thomas George, are proud to support the Lismore Friendship Festival’s Piazza in the Park on Sunday 1 October 2017
The family friendly festival is the recipient of a NSW Government Grant and aims to bring locals and visitors together over Italian-themed food, music, activities, and a community-feel that is characteristic of an Italian piazza setting.
“The event is a great opportunity to celebrate the significant contribution of Italian migrants to our community for over 100 years,” Mr Williams said.
“It is also a chance to come together and recognise the community’s outstanding work in creating positive and successful settlement experiences.”
Mr George said last year’s success sparked an annual celebration of the ‘friendship relationship’ between Lismore and the cities of Conegliano and Vittorio Veneto in northern Italy.
“It is about belonging to and celebrating Lismore and its Italian cultural heritage. The marketplace festival is a spectacular display of our rich cultural diversity and history,” Mr George said.
“After the recent devastating floods in Lismore, this festival is yet another example of our ability to rise up and gather together in a show of strength in community.”
Dr Ros Derrett OAM said the event features a show stopping line-up of musical entertainment including Domenico, the Paradiso Choir and the Summerland Rockers.
“We encourage the local community to come along and celebrate the regions Italian heritage through bocce, tug-o-war, handmade delicacies, family reunions and exhibitions.”
“We’re delighted the NSW Government has recognised the work we are doing with the Italian community in the region,” Ms Derrett said.
Last financial year, the Celebration Grants program provided more than $196,000 in funding to support more than 100 local community festivals and events across NSW.
