COLOUR AND LIGHT ABOUND IN NEW UNIT
Mental Health services in Northern NSW have been given a significant boost with the new Lilli Pili Older Persons’ Mental Health Unit opening in Lismore last month.
The 16-bed unit is part of the redevelopment of the Lismore Base Hospital Mental Health Unit, and forms an essential link in the mental health services available to patients across the Northern NSW Local Health District (NNSWLHD).
“The Older Persons’ Mental Health Unit will provide services specifically for older persons and is the first specialist older persons’ mental health unit on the North Coast,” Thomas George MP, Member for Lismore said.
The unit became operational last month in a staged approach, with 8 beds initially available, and the remaining 8 beds to be progressively opened in the coming months.
The unit was designed with input from the local community Mental Health Forum, and the staff of the mental health unit.
“We want to thank all those involved who have assisted in making this unit a bright, open-plan and colourful place. This will certainly assist in the recovery of older people needing to use this facility,” Dr Richard Buss, Director Mental Health and Drug and Alcohol, said.
An 18-month improvement program to mental health services throughout the region has increased the number of mental health beds available for patients to access acute and sub-acute treatment and assessment services in Northern NSW.
“The completion of this unit and the opening of the Sub-Acute Unit at Byron Central Hospital has delivered an additional 20 mental health beds across the LHD, bringing the total number of beds to 93,” Wayne Jones, Chief Executive, Northern NSW Local Health District, said.
The redevelopment of the Lismore Base Hospital Mental Health Unit included modifications to the Adult Mental Health Unit, including the observation area, which has been upgraded in line with best practice standards.
