A NEW CHAPTER FOR KYOGLE AND LISMORE LIBRARIES

Library services in the Lismore electorate will receive close to $200,000 with Lismore MP Thomas George and Minister for the Arts Don Harwin announcing funding as part of the Public Library Infrastructure Grant program.

Kyogle will redesign its library, receiving $99,673 to replace the existing shelving and furniture, create a new layout and increase flexibility in the floor plan for events and library activities.

While Lismore will get $198,000 to refurbish its library with mobile shelving, smaller service desks and comfortable furniture which will provide much needed spaces for youth, quiet study, a children's area, browsing and programs.

Grants have been awarded to 33 local councils this year, providing significant public benefit and improving public library buildings, spaces and information technology for communities across NSW.

Mr George said the Kyogle and Lismore libraries form an important part of the community, providing much more than simply a place to borrow books.

“Libraries are at the heart of our community and are transforming rapidly to meet the challenges of the digital age,” he said.

“I am thrilled that the NSW Government is continuing its strong support for libraries, especially in rural electorates such as ours.”

Minister for the Arts Don Harwin said the NSW Government had spent $28.8 million on libraries in the current financial year.

“Public libraries continue to grow and provide access to services that help people at all stages of their lives,” Mr Harwin said.

“The Berejiklian Government is committed to working with councils to enhance library services and facilities across the State.

“It is essential rural residents have equitable access to services and I am particularly delighted to see grant funding that will assist 30 rural councils in meeting the specific needs of their library users.

Councils were invited to apply for funding under the Public Library Infrastructure Grant program in October last year.
