MORATORIUM ON NEW WATER EXTRACTION LICENCES
Member for Lismore Thomas George is supporting calls for an independent investigation into water extraction, requesting the NSW Government stop issuing licences for commercial water extraction operations which take water off site.
Mr George has backed a call by The Nationals candidate for Lismore Austin Curtin, for an independent inquiry into water extraction on the Northern Rivers, amidst fears the industry is leading to the lowering of the water table.
An investigation conducted by the NSW Chief Scientist would give all levels of Government the information needed to plan and manage the future of the water extraction industry, Mr George said.
I want to see a total moratorium on new commercial water licences for off farm use being issued by the state until after any findings are released.
Mr George said the moratorium would not apply to any current council development applications which belong to operators who already have a licence.
We need to ensure the long term viability of water for domestic and on farm use for the rural sector, ensuring jobs in the Northern Rivers.
