FUNDING FOR SAFE AND SECURE WATER IN TENTERFIELD
Tenterfield Shire Council has secured up to $7 million in funding to construct a new Tenterfield Water Treatment Plant, under the Government’s $1 billion Safe and Secure Water Program.
Member for Lismore, Thomas George has been working with Council to improve the town’s water supply and following an assessment process, Council secured the funding in February this year.
Mr George said the existing water treatment facility, which was built in 1930, is starting to show its age.
“The funding will be used design and construct a new water treatment plant at Tenterfield, providing an ongoing safe and reliable water supply for Tenterfield residents,” Mr George said.
“It doesn’t matter where you live, everyone in NSW deserves access to safe and reliable water services.
“We know that our communities depend on access to clean, reliable and affordable water, and wastewater infrastructure that meets environmental and health standards and the demand on these services are continuing to grow.
“Today’s funding announcement shows that we are getting on with the job of delivering essential local water and wastewater infrastructure across the State, including right here in Tenterfield,” Mr George said.
Tenterfield Shire Mayor, Peter Petty welcomed the announcement, saying the funding will go a long way in improving the water security for the region, with delivery of the project expected to cost more than $9 million.
“Currently Tenterfield is experiencing extreme drought and that is having a direct impact on the town’s water supply. As Council moves forward this upgrade will allow it to manage its water delivery more effectively, so residents continue to have access to water which meets health and community standards,” he said.
The Program co-funds eligible water and sewerage projects that deliver economic growth in regional NSW through improvements to public health, water security, environmental outcomes and/or social benefits.
