Bill Rixon's Appreciation Dinner

Express Examiner July 99

The conclusion of the autumn session of Parliament has provided me the opportunity to attend functions, go to community fetes, fundraisers and conduct town interviews throughout the electorate.

Bill Rixon's Appreciation Dinner

What an Appreciation Dinner it was! 250 people from all walks of life including community representatives, politicians, friends and family, gathered together to show their thanks for the dedication and hard work undertaken by Bill during his 11 years as the Member for Lismore. The attendance and speeches were a tribute to Bill, his wife Merrilyn and their children.

Review of Firearms Act

With no consultation by the Carr Government with shooters or dealers, a notice was published in the newspaper to notify of a Review of the Firearms Act. This review is to be conducted by the Director General of the Ministry for Police and submissions only in writing by 30 October 1999.

The National Party has been approached by shooters and firearm dealers for assistance over the review of the Act. By legislation, this must take place after June 1999 with the outcome being reported to both houses of Parliament by the end of June 2000.

Copies of a petition are available from my office and are being circulated to firearm owners, dealers and collectors. The aim of the petition is to show the NSW Parliament, both Upper and Lower House, that there is great community support for a full and open review of the Act and to use the Upper House to force Premier Carr to change his mind and allow a Joint Select Parliamentary Committee to conduct the Review.

Wiangaree Project Community Newsletter

The RTA is currently seeking public comment on the options proposed for the upgrading of the Summerland Way at Wiangaree and Dourigan's Gap. Consultants have been engaged to investigate and seek community input. A newsletter is currently available from my office.

Healthy Rivers Commission

A copy of the Draft Report by the Commission's Independent Inquiry into the Clarence River System is available for viewing at my office. A public briefing session will be held at Old Bonalbo Hall on Wednesday 28 July - 1 to 3pm. The Commission welcomes comments by Monday 30 August 1999.

Parents In Pain (PIP)

Rhonda and I were guests at a PIP meeting recently and we soon become aware of their work and aims. This group offers comfort and support to parents, friends and relatives suffering as a result of drug use or addiction. The members of PIP are now considering the establishment of similar groups in surrounding towns and wish to hear from any interested people. Contact person is Margaret Orr on 66281319.

Septic Tank Petitions

Following community protest, I have instigated a petition to be presented to the NSW Parliament, to convey the objections of the people against the new Septic Tank Regulations which came into effect on 1 July 1999.
