Dairy

Express Examiner July 00

Tomorrow I will be interviewing in Casino at the Richmond Valley Council Chambers, to secure an appointment please telephone my staff on 6621 3624.

During July there is a short break in Parliament and I will be available for appointments at the office or if possible, I am happy to make alternative arrangements upon request.

Dairy

I have received a number of supporting calls and messages from local dairy farmers following last Thursday's weeklong deadlock and the passing of the Dairy Industry Bill. The Coalition secured a guarantee from the Carr Government that will assess the financial impacts of dairy deregulation on farmers and their communities. After protracted negotiations, the Coalition secured an undertaking from Agriculture Minister, Richard Amery to establish a committee to investigate the financial impacts of dairy deregulation and make recommendations to the Minister for assistance. This will see the Federal Government's compensation package flow to dairy farmers as planned. I was pleased the Carr Government had finally conceded the State had a role to assist farmers through the extremely difficult process of deregulation. The Coalition and I will keenly follow the Committee's formation, investigations and recommended outcomes. Those outcomes will be pursued vigorously by the Coalition to ensure NSW dairy farmers get the best deal, be it State-based financial assistance or other measures.

Countering Stock Theft

New regulations require drivers transporting stock to carry a statement with details of the animals on their vehicles. Failure to present the statement to police or Rural Lands Protection Board officers will result in prosecution. These measures are aimed at reducing the incidence of stock theft. As mentioned previously, before I am involved with a submission to the Rural Crime Working Party regarding this issue.

National Parks Fires

Recently, it was my honour to represent the Lismore electorate and my community at the Memorial Service for the National Parks and Wildlife Service firefighters who lost their lives and those still struggling with their injuries. The Service reminded me of the great contribution our National Park rangers and firefighters make together with the other emergency services, including local bush fire brigades, police and ambulance.

Dr Vasan Rural Medical Memorial Scholarship Fund

I was very pleased to read how Mrs Vicki Vasan and local GP, Dr Cathryn Amey had launched the Dr Senthil Vasan Rural Medical Memorial Scholarship Fund in partnership with the University of NSW. Encouraging students to country areas was a vision of Dr Vasan's. This is to be commended and the fact that the first student will be visiting Casino next year has made this vision a reality.

New Cattle Movement Controls

These new controls for cattle will come into force in a bid to further control the spread of Bovine Johne's Disease (BJD). It will mean that all cattle (with the exception of steers) from Control Zones in NSW will need to have originated from Market Assurance Program herds or Check Tested herds before they could be moved to QLD. The Casino and Tweed/Lismore Rural Land Protection Boards are currently in Control Zones for BJD and cattle producers in these areas will need to be aware of the new controls. Please do not hesitate to contact my office for further assistance.

Country Commuters To Sydney

I have recently been advised of an independent analysis of problems associated with the Airport Rail Link, following recent difficulties incurred at the introduction of the service. Any country travellers who may have encountered disruptions or wish to convey their views about the service, can do so by writing or contacting my office.
