Stock Theft Forums

I was recently appointed by the National Party to conduct an inquiry into the growing incidence of stock theft. There is little doubt that the demise of the Stock Squad under the Carr Government has left our farm sector exposed. To date I have visited Yass, Narrandera, Mudgee, Coonabarabran, Walgett, Narrabri and Nyngan. Each of these forums has been well attended enabling me to collect valuable information to assist me in compiling a submission on the Party's behalf to the Government's Rural Crime Working Party.

Early Intervention into Learning Difficulties Inquiry

The Legislative Council's Standing Committee on Social Issues is undertaking an inquiry into early intervention into learning difficulties during the early childhood years (ages 0-8). The primary emphasis of the inquiry is on the evaluation and development of programs for children with learning difficulties who with appropriate early intervention would be able to achieve age appropriate outcomes throughout their schooling. Written submissions are welcome from any interested persons. Copies of the terms of reference are available from my office. The closing date is 8 December 2000.

Water Management Bill

I was pleased last week to learn of the Carr Government's withdrawal of its Water Management Bill and is currently preparing a new Bill to be tabled when Parliament resumes next month. The National Party and many water groups were concerned about a number of aspects of the Bill which hopefully will be addressed.
