Search for Top Regional Inventor in NSW

Country inventors are being encouraged to enter into the inaugural NSW Rural Inventor's Award. The NSW Innovation Council is contributing a cash prize of $5,000 for the best regional innovation or invention for 2001. This year's competition is a pilot program for a possible annual award. For further details, please contact my office.

Nursing Scholarships

The NSW Department of Health has advised that applications for 2002 Rural and Remote Undergraduate Nursing Scholarships have opened. This news is appropriate especially following the recent industrial action that highlighted the need for, and shortages of nurses in our hospitals. The scholarships are offers of up to $4,000 to first year undergraduate nursing students with a rural background, who meet certain eligibility criteria. A copy of the guidelines and application forms are available from my office upon request or from www.health.nsw.gov.au/nursing/scholar.htm.

Workers Compensation

Upper House representatives, The Hon Greg Pearce and The Hon Rick Colless, recently visited Lismore electorate, as members of the General Purpose Standing Committee No1, to review and monitor the NSW Workers Compensation scheme. The purpose of the visit was to examine the implications of changes to the Scheme.

Forestry Jobs

Following indications that between 30 and 40 government jobs in State Forests' north-east region are set to disappear over the next two years, I meet with forestry workers in Casino. Staff had recently been verbally advised that 20% of the north-east region's staff would go over the next two years and these positions involved both clerical and field staff. Indications are that jobs would be mainly lost in Casino and Grafton. Rural communities such as Casino can not affort to suffer such large job losses. I will be calling on the Carr Government to abandon its plans to axe these jobs in this region.

Roll Over Protection Structure Rebate

As part of a rural safety campaign for regional NSW, the State Government is providing a $200 rebate to assist owners of tractors used on farms who fit a Roll Over Protection Structure (ROPS) during the campaign. An application form needs to be completed with additional information. This Scheme will conclude on 31 December 2001 and I encourage all farmers to consider and participate in this opportunity.
