Rural Fire Service Inquiry

The Kyogle News December 99

Rural Fire Service Inquiry

This week it was announced that an inquiry would be conducted by the Legislative Council's General Purpose Standing Committee in the Rural Fire Service. This inquiry should be able to get answers to some of the concerns that presently exist within the Service. Interested parties can obtain the terms of reference from my office.

Teachers Strike

I do not condone the current strike action being taken by teachers over the past couple of weeks however; I understand the anger and frustration many are feeling. I have called on Minister Aquilina to meet with the Federation and negotiate a speedy resolution to avoid further strikes.

Hobby Farmers

I believe the Federal Government must reconsider any changes regarding the taxation rules pertaining to hobby farms. Implementing limits and thresholds to farm value and/or income limits may have a negative impact on local economies.

Distance Education Fees

The Carr Government is increasing fees, from approximately $45 to $800, for students studying through distance education centres at non-government schools next year. I have called on the Government to reassess the plan immediately to enable students to continue studying these subjects, because many may have to reconsider due to these exorbitant costs.

Parliament has now risen for the year and will be in recess until April 2000. Subject to Parliament not being recalled, I will be conducting interviews in Kyogle on Wednesday 8 December, please contact my office on 6621 3624, for an appointment or further details.

As 1999 draws to a close, Rhonda and I, together with my staff, Karen and Bronwyn, would like to wish you a happy and holy Christmas and trust that we will all be blessed with health and happiness in the new millennium. Please remember to drive safety over the festive season.
