The Kyogle News July 99
My first State Budget as your representative was both pleasing and
disappointing. I welcomed the confirmation of funding for the Lismore Drug and
Alcohol Detoxification facility, yet it was particularly disappointing to
realise promises made by Minister's, who visited the Lismore Electorate prior to
the election, will not be honoured.
Bovine Johne's Disease
Last week the Minister announced the introduction of Bovine Johne's Disease (BJD)
zoning will commence on 1 August 1999. I believe the Minister is now examining
funding proposals to assist cattle producers whose stock are affected by BJD.
This issue is particularly important in regard to assisting our area that will
be initially classified as Control Zones due to their known higher incidence of
BJD. Lismore-Tweed and Casino Rural Lands Protection Boards are keen to rapidly
move to Protected status. To achieve this the Boards will be required to
undertake further surveillance and testing.
The Department will also be committed to providing technical assistance to these
regions in moving to Protected status.
Recently, I met with a deputation from the Meat Poultry Industry where Dr Joanne
Sillince (NSW Farmers) outlined their concerns. They sought the support of the
National Party on the following;
continuation of guidelines beyond expiry date until they are properly reviewed
strengthening of legislation - the ability to bargain collectively and have
access to accurate market data
regulation of industry to ensure Biological Security and Food Safety
Protection of supply for those highly efficient farms with very high debt.
Tuesday this week, I was humbled in addressing the Parliament during my
Inaugural Speech. Whilst it was an anxious moment, I was extremely proud to have
family and friends present.
