The Kyogle News April 00

Parliament

Parliament resumed this month for its Budget sitting. I am disappointed that the Carr Government seem to be more intent on debating Federal issues and not prepared to debate and answer questions on State matters such as roads, health, police etc.

Area Assistance Scheme Grants

Congratulations to Woodenbong Showground Facility Group and Eden Creek Fairymount Preschool in being successful in their applications for funding. I am sure the local communities will benefit greatly from this financial assistance.

Cross Border Commission

The Coalition, through Don Page, has introduced legislation establishing an independent Cross Border Commission, which will examine issues affecting people and businesses in communities bordering other states. I am pleased with this initiative especially following my recent meetings at Murwillumbah to discuss the problems, which affect the whole Northern Rivers in being competitive to our Queensland counterparts.

Water Management White Paper

Submissions closed for the White Paper on 31 March and subsequently the National Party have released copies of its comments, compiled by Don Page, Shadow Minister for Land & Water Conservation, who is also leading the debate on for having the legislation tabled for 12 months. This should be concluded by the end of the week. Anyone interested in obtaining a copy can contact my office.

Application Forms

Forms are available, from my office, for assistance under the 2000 Royal Australian Historical Society's local history and archives grants program.
May I extend my blessings to everyone during the Easter period and I trust the Anzac celebrations will be enjoyed by all.
