The Kyogle News July 00

During July there is a short break in Parliament and I will have the opportunity of interviewing in Casino, Kyogle and conducting a West of the Range tour.

The Coalition's amendment for a State-based Structural Adjustment Price Support Scheme for NSW dairy farmers facing deregulation was passed in the Upper House last week. However, when the amended Dairy Industry Bill was returned to the Lower House the Government, including Country Labor, refused to accept it. The Bill was returned to the Upper House where it received the same level of support from the Independents. We believe the Coalition's package is essential for the future survival of dairy farmers and their communities across NSW. It is incumbent on the Carr Government to accept this Bill as amended and provide a Scheme to assist farmers over the first three years of deregulation. An update on the current status can be requested by contacting my office.

Stock Theft

The Stock Squad of the NSW Police has been reduced under the Carr Government to the status of the virtually non-existence. The Carr Government must immediately reinstate and dedicate specific officers to the stock squad and to resource it sufficiently so it can do its job. I am currently involved in preparing a submission to the Rural Crime Working Party regarding this issue.

National Parks Fires

It was my honour to represent my community at the Memorial Service for the National Parks and Wildlife Service firefighters who lost their lives and those still struggling with their injuries. The Service reminded me of the great contribution our National Park rangers and firefighters make together with the other emergency services, including local bush fire brigades, police and ambulance.
